A small group of Kiwis made the trip to Eagle Park in the Adelaide Hills mid January to compete at the 2010 Australian National Champs
Fiona Macdermid (Elite Woman), Mathew Waghorn (U19) and Anton Cooper (U17) competed in the Cross Country event, with the Eagle Park venue confirmed as the site of the Australian National MTB Champs for the next three years.
The Cross Country race course was tight single track which required a good start - all three riders achieved this and worked their way through the field in the first lap. Fiona made ground up to 3rd in the Elite Woman’s race before an unfortunate crash saw her taken to hospital. Mathew moved from the back in the start grid up to 6th before a slow leak and puncture forced him into the tech zone to change a wheel, finishing 8th. In the U17 race, pocket rocket Anton worked his way to the front of the field to win by over 2 minutes . He was awarded the gold medal and prize money, and as he wasn’t an Australian the green & gold winners jersey went to second place.
