MTBNZ has an events portfolio that is always evolving, and one that has some tradition and history behind it.
In its original guise as the NZMBA, National Series events were run in various formats during the 90s and early part of this century. Rebranding to MTBNZ took place in 2001 together with another rapid evolution of the sport. Especially with the events space this evolution has seen the National Series restructured to its current format as the NZ MTB Cup, consisting of the North Island Cup and South Island Cup as separate but integral entities. Riders now have a choice, often determined by high costs of travel, time off work etc to persue one Island Cup or both, or the NZ MTB Cup which is effect the National Series.
MTBNZ also caught up with the rest of the world in 2002 with setting up the stand-alone NZ National MTB Championships – the only event that the UCI recognise as determining National Champions in XCO, DHI and 4X disciplines. From humble beginnings in Blenheim, this event has now started to realise its status as a true championship event, and is currently the only race on the domestic calendar that is a compulsory part of NZ MTB Team selection.
MTBNZ appreciate that this event portfolio is aligned with competitive MTB racing. The huge raft of private event promoters now operating in NZ provide fantastic delivery in the recreational MTB event market, which is an area that MTBNZ are interested in looking at in the near future.
