2010 Athlete Development Pathway

The MTBNZ Athlete Development Pathway is designed to assist competitive mountainbikers with planning and  targeting appropriate events where depth and quality of competition can be assured. For both domestic and international events, the pathway sets out priorities against each event which reflect the weighting that will be applied to performance at those events with regards to NZ MTB Team selection.

Regarding domestic events, priority one events are those which any athlete who wants to compete against NZ’s best should target. Priority one events carry the highest weighting with respect to their importance to selection, priority two proportionaltely less and so on down to priority fours. The aim of highlighting domestic priority one events is to ensure that NZ’s best athletes compete against each other at targeted events on home turf at regular intervals and at quality events.

National MTB Champs is the only compulsory NZ MTB Team selection event. Oceania MTB Champs is a priority one, but not compulsory – however this event provides the absolute best chance for Elite athletes to win early season UCI points. An absolute necessity for especially XCO athletes targeting a Northern Hemisphere racing campaign. Oceanias also provides a great opprtunity to race against Oceanias best, including an always strong Australian MTB Team.

The aim of highlighting international priority one events is to provide a reasonable pathway supporting World Championship preparation in the environment that really matters, against the Worlds best and often with UCI points on the line.
